HCWL Gets Recognized!

Like music, storytelling is an art that virtually everyone enjoys in some shape or form.

Whether it’s a movie, a novel, a comic book, a fairytale told by a parent to a child from memory, a ghost story told when the power goes out, a season-long story arch of a favorite TV show, or a highly immersive video game — good storytelling is something that fascinates many, and often inspires them to consider becoming a writer.

Now, aspiring and up-and-coming writers from throughout the Hunt County area will have an opportunity to bounce ideas off of each other, network and ask for advice on how to get published at monthly meetings of the Hunt County Writers’ League, which will be held at the Texan Theater in Greenville starting next Saturday, Aug. 11.

“Everyone has music festivals, but we wanted something where creative writers of all types – novelists, songwriters, screenwriters – anyone can get together and have some kind of fellowship,” said one of the league’s founders and Herald-Banner book reviewer C. Derick Miller. “I’ve been doing this (writing as a professional fiction author) for about 10 years, but never really met with any other writers face-to-face until about a month ago. I really enjoyed it and thought it would be great to do on a larger scale.”

As the Hunt County Writers’ League continues meeting on the monthly basis, readings of excerpts from attendees’ novels, short stories, poems, song lyrics, and screen and stage plays will be a common occurance in addition to it being a place where Hunt County-area creative writers can network, regardless of experience level.

“I’d love for kids to come out to the meetings too, because a lot of times, your creative kids are the quiet ones, and sometimes the ‘cool kids’ or maybe their dads think they’re weird for wanting to be writers,” Miller said. “But, we want to encourage them and help them along with taking the next step.”

The first meeting of the Hunt County Writers’ League will be Satuday, Aug. 11, in the lobby of the Texan Theater from 5 to 6 p.m. No membership is needed to attend, and writers are encouraged to “keep it PG” and appropriate for “middle school-aged kids.”

Breaking News!!!

The movie ‘Clerks’ is now on Netflix which officially makes it the most valuable property on the internet! Forget Google! Yahoo? What’s that? Your opinion regarding this subject is invalid. Thank you, Netflix, for recognizing Kevin Smith as the most important person in the universe. If this was a Bill & Ted movie, Kevin Smith would be floating in a chair in the future telling Rufus to get in the phone booth to save the chosen ones. If you leave the ‘M’ out of his last name, he becomes Kevin Sith, and could kick the living crap out of Vader and Palpatine at the same time while smoking a cigarette. In case you haven’t figured this out, I’m a big fan of Kevin Smith. What makes me even happier is the fact my son was the one who brought it to my attention. He was equally as excited! I have performed well as a father and I will sleep soundly for the next 8 hours. First…I’m watching Clerks. End of story.

New Band To Sing Old C. Derick Miller Songs?

Remember never being able to touch the radio while riding in your older brother’s car? They’re the ‘live’ version of that. 8 Bore are four Texas musicians that play what they want. From Toto to Zepplin, if you don’t like what you hear…just wait for the next song! Rumor has it they’ll be incorporating the old original Whiskeyhat songs by Tommy Cross and C. Derick Miller into the set list! Maybe those songs aren’t dead after all…

Show your support for this new band here!

Haunted Guitar Makes Novelist Scream!

Okay, this totally isn’t newsworthy…or is it? I was sitting at my desk doing what I do when suddenly…my guitar begins to play on its own! I jumped into ‘old Chad Miller mode’ to investigate. Before I could get my hands on any ghost hunting gear, a cricket jumped out of the guitar and made a break for it. The saddest part about the whole situation was that the cricket played the guitar better than I do. We are currently in contract negotiations…
