From The Greenville Herald Banner:

A new novel by Greenville-born dark fiction author C. Derick Miller will be released on Aug. 30; it is dark fiction and is titled “A Taste Of Home,” from Texas publisher Black Rose Writing.

Miller is the Herald-Banner’s Arts and Entertainment contributor and reviews books by authors in the region for the Herald-Banner’s Sunday Brunch section each week.

Following is the publisher’s synopsis of Miller’s new novel:

“Toby Liberman is nearing the end of his rope. After a fateful confrontation with his wife’s lover, he is chased into the woods only to be discovered by an unidentifiable creature. He is attacked and rendered unconscious. Upon waking at the scene of a gruesome triple homicide, Toby is arrested as the sole suspect and thrown into a jail cell with a strange man who knows way too much about Toby’s predicament. The stranger reveals that Toby now possesses the curse of the werewolf.

Using his new-found strength to flee his captors, Toby begins to discover that things are not what they seem in the sleepy town of Twin Oaks, Texas.

Now hunted by law enforcement as well as the town’s gun-toting civilians, Toby seeks vengeance against his false accusers and embarks upon a quest to clear his name once and for all.”

Miller is a fiction writer, poet and songwriter born in Greenville. A seasoned paranormal investigator and traveler for the art industry, his works include “Diary Of A Gonzo Ghost Hunter,” the new book “A Taste Of Home,” the short story “Nemesis” published in the Beast Anthology, and a number of songs recorded by Whiskeyhat on their debut EP “El Gallo Diablo.”

Upcoming works already announced by his publishers include the sequel to “Far From Home,” due out in December, another planned early next year, and several short stories including one to be published in the popular Death’s Head Press anthology “And Hell Followed.”

“(Miller) is a believer and an adventurer looking for answers to questions that most people dare not ask,” writes musician and journalist Del James in the intro to Miller’s first book. “He looks for these answers in dark places that most of society steers clear of. In order to share certain experiences and supernatural insights, he has chosen to travel along a paranormal path that is safer during the day but far more interesting at night. Enjoy the ride.

James is also the road manager for Guns N’ Roses and a former Rolling Stone writer.

Chapter 15

Chapter 14 of my novel in production, Extinguished, is in the books. Tomorrow, I begin chapter 15 of the first draft and the continuing journey of my little demon hunting,  firefighting sweetheart. Yes, I fall in love with my characters. What’s the point of writing their story if you don’t? It feels like only yesterday that I wrote the intro to the first chapter which would set her story in motion. I was sitting in a hotel room on a foggy, San Francisco day with a simple idea and a lot of caffeine…

“The tears finally gave in to gravity and fell toward the floor with great velocity. Splashing silently atop her polished boots, a tiny hint of the light spectrum could be seen through the young girl’s clouded eyes as though it were the only illumination in the fading evening glow through the skylight. Instances such as this were becoming more and more frequent. Inhaling deeply to hide any signs of her current sadness sat a firefighter by the name of Angel Burns. The irony of her name was a cruel fate on this day as she perched atop the rear step of the rescue vehicle marked number 33.

She realized all too late that sucking in her tears was one of the bigger mistakes she could’ve made. The overwhelming smell from the gasoline fumes and tires heated by the afternoon sun burned her senses. If her eyes weren’t already so full of tears they would’ve been anyway. A small price to pay, though. The last thing Angel wanted any of them to see was the fact that she was nearing her breaking point.

Angel could hear the early signs of a radio crackle and she prepared for the worst. In the seconds before the voice revealed itself, her mind raced wondering exactly what useless task the powers-that-be had in store. Last week, it had been the solo washing of the fire engines while forced to wear nothing but her T Shirt and cargo shorts. The men watched anxiously from the stairway landing in hopes a nipple would poke through the fabric caused by contact with the frigid water. Angel was a slave in this man’s profession and began to wonder if the unemployment line was a better solution than following her passion. No fucking way.”

Then…the story introduces some demonic shit and everything goes to Hell! It was a short story at first but my beta readers demanded more. I soon outlined an entire novel.

The synopsis:

Angel Burns is a young fire fighter with a shrouded history. During a routine night at work, she accidentally stumbles upon a demonic ceremony that brings her memories out of hiding…as well as her repressed supernatural powers. Angel soon learns that her life was intended for something greater than extinguishing fires for mortals as she dives deeper into the demonic underworld. Now on the payroll of the Vatican, Angel embarks upon an epic quest to protect the Gutenberg Bibles from the clutches of evil. If successful, she will secure peace for generations to come. If she fails, the power of the ancient books will be unleashed to possess the most powerful figure on the face of the planet!

Stay tuned, my loyalists.

Dear Local Musicians…

Well, you can add Greenville Life Magazine to my laundry list of local literary contributions. Strange that I had to get noticed by a literary agent in London back in 2015 (Thank you Keith Chawgo and Vickie Rae) before making a splash (actually, it’s a tiny ripple) in my hometown of Greenville, Texas but the important part is…I’m here! (I’ve been writing professionally for ten years) I owe it all to a handful of people who recognized and believed in me enough to make this happen. They gambled on me…and I’ll never forget it. As an Arts & Entertainment Contributor for The Greenville Herald Banner, I’ve been given a column in the magazine to interview and review local bands and musicians. Someone obviously likes what I have to say and how I say it. I have this months band already but I will need more for future issues. I’m also a recorded ASCAP registered song lyricist with over one hundred unrecorded sets of lyrics and a million more in my head. Let’s talk! I will be attending local shows on a regular basis so KNOCK MY SOCKS OFF!!! Contact Me!
